March 20 at 8 p.m. Recycling: San Diego’s Waste Woes February 21 at 8 p.m. Alzheimer's: The Cost of Growing Old Program Description Alzheimer’s is currently the fourth leading cause of death in San Diego County according to the Alzheimer’s Association; 90,000 people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. The disease affects more than 360,000 family members and caregivers. In San Diego County, it is estimated that the costs of Alzheimer’s is more than $1.7 billion. As the Baby Boomer’s reach retirement age, and the population is living longer – Alzheimer’s is projected to bankrupt the Medicare system along with many families. Envision San Diego explores the dire impact Alzheimer’s is predicted to have on our health care system. The program will include interviews with David Shenk, award-winning author of The Forgetting: Alzheimer’s, Portrait of an Epidemic and William Thies, Ph.D., vice president of the Alzheimer’s Association. January 17 at 8 p.m. Are we Prepared for the Next Natural Disaster? Program DescriptionKPBS Reporter Andrew Phelps looks at the process of rebuilding for fire victims who lost their homes. Amita Sharma reports on how the lack of resources at city, county and state levels hampered firefighting efforts and led to the destruction of homes. Rebecca Tolin reports on how San Diegans are building into the arc of fire danger, and what's being done to mitigate that risk through building design and defensible space. But with global warming, increasing drought and growth in the wildland urban interface, some are calling to limit development in fire-prone areas. The program will also include insights from KPBS reporters and editors who were on the job during the fires, including Andrew Phelps, Will Carless, Voice of San Diego's Scott Lewis and others. They'll discuss communication and coordination issues that arose between different jurisdictions and the political climate for improving public safety. Gloria Penner will interview San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, San Diego City Council President Scott Peters and County Supervisor Diane Jacob on what steps are being taken to improve the effectiveness of San Diego's response to the next wildfire. 2007 Broadcast Schedule October 18 at 8 p.m. Tapped Out: San Diego's Water Future Program Description KPBS explores the future of San Diego’s water supply – and with it, the future of San Diego itself. Gloria Penner will host an exploration of the problems and the solutions. The program will feature news segments from KPBS and 10News reporters, including: where San Diego tap water comes from and why there isn’t enough; the amount of water used on lawns and landscaping in San Diego County; water conservation at home; water recycling and reclamation; and the impact of population growth on our water supply. In addition, Mike Chrisman, the California Secretary of Resources and Fern Steiner, Board Chair for the San Diego County Water Authority, will join Penner in studio. November 14 at 9 p.m. Gimme Shelter: A Housing Project Program Description San Diego’s housing market is notorious. Foreclosures are now commonplace throughout the region. KPBS reporters Joanne Faryon, Amita Sharma and Nicole Lozare team up to present a look at the factors that come in to play with this disheartening issue in Envision San Diego: Gimme Shelter – A Housing Project. Along with an overview of how realtors may deal with foreclosures, the program sheds light on a predatory loan practice. It also examines our area’s decrease in VA home loans and includes an interview with Rep. Bob Filner about lenders operating without governmental supervision.
Program Description San Diego was once the methamphetamine capital of the United States, and while we no longer have that disquieting distinction, it is only because the drug has woven its way into the fabric of the nation: whether urban, suburban or rural, and rich and poor alike. Envision San Diego: Meth Next Door will explore the stunning impact crystal methamphetamine use has on public safety and the pervasiveness of the drug and the wide spectrum of those addicted, from housewives to business owners to teenagers.
